Positive Jobs News as Canada’s Unemployment Rate Drops

TORONTO, October 12, 2011 – As Statistic Canada’s Labour Force Survey shows a surge of 61,000 new jobs were created last month, taking the unemployment rate down to 7.1 per cent (the lowest level since December 2008), Randstad Canada, the country’s leader for staffing, recruitment and HR Services, continues to see a steady increase in hiring within the professional, scientific and technical service industries.

According to the findings from Statistics Canada, in the 12 months to September, employment has grown by 1.7% (+294 000), primarily in Ontario and Alberta. Over this period, full-time employment rose by 2.5% (+344 000). September saw 63,800 full-time additions, while part- time employment declined by 2,900. The seasonal return of teachers to school added nearly 40,000 jobs while some of the highest growth rates were seen in professional, scientific and technical services, continuing a year-long upward trend.

Randstad Canada President Jan Hein Bax says the company is seeing a similar trend in hiring. “September was a strong month, we saw demand within the Computer Software & Services industry increase by 43.75% from August to September,” he says. “Similarly, the Systems Integration/Consulting Industry has seen gains of 31.31% in permanent hiring from July to September and a 32% increase in the Telecomunications industry for the same period.”

Bax says the company has also seen specific provinces lead the way in terms of growth. “In Calgary, our Randstad Technologies branches saw a 110.29% increase in placements from July to September alone. While Montreal saw a boost of 96.59% and Ottawa jumped 75% over the same period,” he says.

“This renewed investment in full time employees speaks to more long-term planning. Businesses are recognizing that by seeking and retaining well-trained, productive, and innovative talent they are making an investment into their company and this focus on talent will lead to business growth," says Bax.
